After 64 years of love and devotion, Hugh and Peggy Hadden entered Heaven within two days of each other, on August 9 and 11, 2025, to be with their Lord and Savior.
Hugh John Hadden, 89, was born August 31, 1935, in Jackson, Michigan, to the late Hugh John and Lucille (Brandau) Hadden. Peggy Joan Hadden, 85, was born November 26, 1939, in Manilla, Iowa, to the late Manly and Viola (Schultz) Humphreys.
They are lovingly remembered by their children Kari (Michael) Prall and Jason (Beth) Hadden of Tipp City; grandchildren Austin (Jessica) Hadden, Jakob (Lindsay) Prall, Riley Hadden, Taylor Prall, Brendan Hadden, Eli (Kendall) Hadden, Owen Hadden, and Jordi (Rocky) Casselman; great-grandchildren Mack and Chip Casselman; bonus son Shawn (Jenny) Rust and their children Emma and Chance. Peggy's siblings also survive: Ronald (Vickie) Humphreys of Sturtevant, Wisconsin; Danny (Donna) Humphreys of Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin; and Linda (Danny) Boedeker of Gilbert, Arizona.
A Love Story
Peggy grew up in Manilla, Iowa, and in 1957 left for Northwest Missouri State with just two skirts, two blouses, one sweater, one coat, and a single pair of shoes — the first in her family to attend college. Hugh grew up in Jackson, Michigan, enlisted in the Navy in 1953, and after four years of service found himself at Northwest Missouri State because of a bet he lost to his best friend. Hugh served as president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Peggy as president of her sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. Their forever-together began at a TKE/ASA mixer in 1958. Peggy earned her B.S. in Education, Hugh his B.S. in Industrial Engineering (later earning a master's from Iowa State), and they married on June 4, 1961.
Life Together
Over the years, Hugh and Peggy lived in thirteen homes across six states — Iowa, Michigan, Oregon, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio — raising two children and wearing out several station wagons along the way. In 1973, Hugh accepted a position with A.O. Smith and the family settled in Tipp City, Ohio, ultimately on Main Street, in their historic dream home of 47 years. Tipp City is where their passion for community service flourished.
Peggy's Legacy
Peggy was one of five founders of the Tipp City Players; received the Jayceettes Distinguished Service Award in 1975; and was an integral part of The Clothesline for 36 years. She taught at Tipp City Schools for 10 years, was named the 2005 Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Tipp City Chamber of Commerce, and received the 2011 Ohio Honorary Thespian Award. She served multiple terms as president of the historical society and held leadership roles in the Welcome Wagon and Jaycees. She was best known for her extraordinary costume collection — over 50,000 pieces — which dressed high school plays for 28 years and brought joy to countless friends, especially the Drama Queens, and family events.
Hugh's Legacy
Hugh helped start youth soccer in Tipp City in 1976, served as president of Tipp Monroe Community Services (1979–1981) and of the Tipp City Chamber of Commerce (1982). After retiring from A.O. Smith in 2000, he worked with his son at Pin High Golf. A devoted Rotarian and lifelong Paul Harris Fellow, Hugh also enjoyed a long-standing poker group founded in 1938. His hobbies included collecting antique toys, comic books, radio programs, and sports memorabilia — and he loved following all of his grandchildren's high school and college sports teams, along with all Tippecanoe athletic programs. Hugh was always in the stands.
Faith and Family
Hugh and Peggy were deeply involved at Tipp City Global Methodist Church, where they sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, washed dishes on Wednesday nights, and provided financial leadership. Faith was the foundation of their lives, and their grandchildren were their pride and joy. They never missed an athletic event, school program, or birthday party, and they passed on countless life lessons — from cooking, to pinching pennies, to fixing anything with duct tape. Although Alzheimer's slowly took away some of their abilities, it never dimmed their love and devotion for each other. Hugh was promoted to Heaven first; Peggy soon followed, reaching for his hand. Their souls are forever inseparable.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the care teams at Day City Hospice, Randall Residence, StoryPoint, and Versailles Healthcare Center.
