IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen Louise
(Barrett) Sumner
June 3, 1925 – November 28, 2020
Helen Louise Sumner journeyed to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on November 28, 2020, at the age of 95, after living a life filled with love and faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alice Barrett; her sister, Katharine Mae; beloved husband of 51 years, Earl Crompton Sumner; sisters-in-law Lucelle and Doreen; her son, Steven Crompton Sumner; and son-in-law, Tony Jackson.
She is survived by son, Christopher Barrett Sumner; and daughters, Carol Louise (Jim) Burdette and Katharine Lucelle Jackson. Her grandchildren and great-grandchild were the light of her life: Chris' daughter Lisa and her husband Brandon Myers; Carol's children: Jacqueline Hobbs (Cory); Katharine Burdette (Isaac); and Bradley (Amanda) Hobbs and their daughter Aislyn. Helen is also survived by niece, Robin Gianakopoulos and nephew, Jeff West and their families. Family celebrations of birthdays and holidays were an important tradition and created many cherished memories.
Helen, born in Columbus, Ohio, graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. She married Earl, whom she always called "Easy," on June 11, 1950. On their first anniversary, he was called back into the Navy. They exchanged daily letters and reading those letters after Easy's death was a real comfort to Helen. After his service, they moved to Dayton and then to Tipp City in 1954. She became a happy home-maker and a devoted mother of four children. She had a special talent for baking and canned many batches of tomatoes and applesauce from their garden. She was very talented at sewing, counted cross-stitch and embroidery. Helen enjoyed flower arranging and shared a love of growing plants and flowers, including taking wild-flower hikes with Easy. African Violets were one of her specialties along with starting roses from cuttings. Helen and Easy joined the Tipp City United Methodist Church in 1955 and were members of the Alpha Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the Dorcas Circle and United Methodist Women, and volunteered for many years at the Clothesline, a charitable thrift store operated by several churches in the community.
She was a member of the Year Round Garden Club, Celiac Support Group and belonged to the Miami Valley Orchid Society with Easy. Helen was blessed with many long-time friends and neighbors who became like family, including her caregiver, Keri Laskey.
A service will be held on December 5 at 2:00 PM at the Tipp City United Methodist Church, 8 W. Main St., Tipp City, OH; with visitation an hour prior. Masks are required. Arrangements have been entrusted to FRINGS AND BAYLIFF FUNERAL HOME, 327 W. Main St. Tipp City, OH 45371.
Donations may be made to her church or United Methodist Committee on Relief in Helen's memory.
