David Owen
Werts

Frings and Bayliff Funeral Home
4:00 - 6:00 pm (Eastern time)
David Owen Werts, 75, passed away September 1, 2026 while vacationing in Bar Harbor, Maine. David was born August 20, 1951 to the late Allen Duane Werts and Betty Charline Niesley Werts in Troy, Ohio.
David spent his childhood years growing up in Frederick, Ohio playing with neighborhood friends, swimming at the Clearwater Pool and riding his bike to the Millers Grove drive-in theater.
David attended Tipp schools for all 12 years and enjoyed recalling that during those years his classes bounced around between the “castle”, Broadway, Nevin Coppock, Central and the old Tippecanoe High School. After graduating in 1969 he enrolled at Wright State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, majoring in math, in 1973. After student teaching in Vandalia, he applied for an opening in the math department at Tippecanoe High School and he was hired. During his 30 years of teaching he educated students in all areas of math from algebra and geometry to pre-calculus to calculus. It always brought a smile to his face to hear past students tell him that college math was far less challenging thanks to what they learned in his classes. He made many enduring friendships during his 30 years of teaching including working for principals Norv Deeter and John Berk, keeping score for the high school girls’ basketball teams coached by Tom Rettig and traveling during summer vacations with Mel Christian. He retired in 2003 and he and Georgia spent their retirement years taking long walks, escaping Ohio winters by taking cruises around the Caribbean and enjoying several Road Scholar trips. He served as a president of the Tipp-Monroe Optimist Club, belonged to the Miami County Herb Society, the Tipp City Garden Club, helped organize the Miami County MS Walk, was on the KIT-TV board and helped with the Miami County Science Day.
Dave could make friends wherever he went and people were drawn to his warm, caring personality. He loved his Tesla and would offer to take friends and family for a ride.
David was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Michael who passed away in 2023. He is survived by his fiancé and loving partner of 35 years, Georgia Bayman, sister Charline Werts, sister-in-law Terri Werts, nephew Tyler Werts (wife Kristina and great-niece Addison), niece Jenna Werts and nephew Sam Werts, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Chris and Evelyn Bayman, as well as numerous cousins and extended family members.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Frings and Bayliff Funeral Home, 327 W. Main St., Tipp City, Ohio 45371. Family and friends are invited to honor David’s legacy by sharing their favorite memories, stories, and moments together. The family welcomes expressions of sympathy and asks that, in lieu of flowers, condolences be shared through a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, www.nationalmssociety.org or the Ohio Academy of Science, www.ohiosci.org.
